Hallowed Chamber as Absurdity Chamber: The Natasha vs Akpabio face-off, by Akin Ogunlade

Akpabio and Natasha

In a democracy, the legislative chamber is expected to be a bastion of decorum, where ideas clash in a structured manner to yield policies that serve the public good. However, the recent face-off between Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and Senate President Godswill Akpabio turned Nigeria’s Senate into something resembling an absurdist theatre, where authority was wielded less as a tool of governance and more as a weapon of suppression.

At the heart of the confrontation was the Kogi Central lawmaker’s insistence on being heard, a right fundamental to any senator. But rather than engaging her concerns with the solemnity they deserved, Senate President Akpabio chose the route of dismissal, deflection, and open ridicule. The exchange, which played out in full public glare, did not just expose the imbalance of power within the chamber but also the troubling trend of silencing dissent, particularly when it comes from a strong-willed woman in a male-dominated space.

Akpoti-Uduaghan, known for her vocal stance on governance and development, was reportedly seeking to raise an issue of urgent national importance when she was met with Akpabio’s cavalier attitude. His patronizing remarks and outright refusal to grant her audience were emblematic of a larger systemic issue: the weaponization of procedure to stifle opposition voices. It is one thing to enforce legislative rules; it is another to use them as a bludgeon against those who dare to challenge the status quo.

The Senate, often referred to as the Hallowed Chamber, has, over time, degenerated into an Absurdity Chamber where power dynamics often overshadow the essence of democracy. The institution, which should serve as a forum for debate and national progress, now frequently functions as a stage for grandstanding, political bullying, and the trivialization of serious concerns.

This particular episode serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by women in politics. Akpoti-Uduaghan’s ordeal is not unique, it mirrors the experiences of female politicians who must constantly fight against systemic biases and dismissive attitudes from their male counterparts. In a more progressive political climate, the focus should have been on the content of her submission rather than a display of legislative arrogance.

For a chamber that should embody the best of democratic ideals, the Akpoti-Akpabio clash raises pertinent questions: Are we witnessing genuine legislative governance, or is the Senate merely a performance space where power is flaunted for its own sake? And more importantly, if a sitting senator can be treated with such disregard, what does that say about the institution’s respect for the voices of ordinary Nigerians?
In a twist to the imbroglio:
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has publicly accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment and victimization. In a recent interview with Arise News, she recounted an incident from December 2023 during a visit to Mr. Akpabio’s residence in Akwa Ibom State. According to her, Mr. Akpabio made inappropriate advances, suggesting they could “create quality moments” together, which made her uncomfortable.

In response, Mrs. Ekaette Akpabio, the wife of the Senate President, has denied these allegations, describing them as fabricated and baseless. She emphasized her husband’s disciplined nature and respect for women, asserting that such incidents could not have occurred in their home.

The allegations have sparked calls for an investigation. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged President Bola Tinubu and the Senate to conduct a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation into the matter, emphasizing the seriousness of the accusations and the need to uphold the integrity of the Senate.

As of now, there has been no official response from Senate President Akpabio regarding these allegations.

If the Senate is to regain its dignity, it must recognize that respect for diverse voices, regardless of gender, party affiliation, or political stance, is not a privilege but a necessity. Until then, what should be a Hallowed Chamber will remain an Absurdity Chamber, where governance plays second fiddle to ego and exclusion.
