LASG to document all tourists sites on Wikimedia, to Host Webinar on for Journalists

Nov. 13, 2024

The Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture has concluded plans to document all tourism sites across the State on Wikimedia, in partnership with the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria.

In a statement on Wednesday, the State government said, this initiative is part of the Ministry’s commitment to showcase Lagos’s rich cultural and historical heritage to a global audience.

In furtherance of this goal, the Ministry, through a collaborative effort with a dedicated Wikimedia-in-Residence, has conducted a needs assessment covering the Ministry’s key activities across its various departments.

This assessment is designed to ensure that all tourism sites and cultural assets are accurately documented to meet international standards.

The next phase of this project will see the Ministry organising a contest among writers, encouraging participants to create outstanding articles on Lagos’s tourism sites.

The Ministry, alongside its partners, will also host a webinar on Thursday, 14th November at 3:00 p.m., targeted at journalists from newspapers and magazines across Nigeria.

A statement by the Honourable Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka on Monday, said the webinar would feature a panel session with an esteemed lineup of experts.

According to her, Journalists from across the nation are invited to participate in the interactive session, which aims to explore the critical role of journalism in preserving cultural heritage and fostering a legacy for future generations.

The Commissioner, therefore, encouraged Nigerian journalists to join the important discourse and contribute to Lagos’s vision of promoting its cultural landmarks and attractions to the world by registering for the webinar via https://bit.ly/4f1EZPi.
